This scholarship is for Grand Canyon river guides who are following their educational goals. It is inspired by the memory of Kenton and his lifelong pursuit of knowledge, learning, innovation and teaching. (Award amount and number of scholarships to be determined).
Guides by nature are lifetime learners. The Whale Foundation wants to assist in those efforts. Every year, in honor of Kenton Grua, scholarships are awarded for those enrolled in courses that contribute to furthering education, whether it be for a degree, certification or course. The application process opens February 14 and closes May 15.The boatmen in the book are used to convey a message that there is so much beauty to be seen in the canyon. The characters Martin Litton and Kenton Grua are examples of boatmen that share a special connection with the canyon because of the canyon’s beauty.Kentucky Scholarships. Many Kentucky businesses and organizations have set up financial aid programs to help Kentuckians with their college costs. Some are available statewide, while others are limited to several counties, one county or one school. KHEAA has gathered information on as many of these programs as we can.
Kevin Fedarko's new book, The Emerald Mile is a white knuckle thriller that chronicles three Grand Canyon river guides epic and illegal run though the canyon in late June of 1983. The Colorado river was at flood stage and the Glen Canyon Dam was suffering a engineering collapse in its spillways.
The Whale Foundation awards a number of Kenton Grua Memorial Scholarships each year to assist guides with the cost of continuing education. Additionally, the Health Insurance Assistance Program awards stipends to guides, making it a little easier to purchase their own health insurance.

Grua's record stood until 2016, when a team of kayakers made the trip in 35 hours and 5 minutes - that record was broken 2 days by a solo kayaker bringing the speed to 34 hours and 2 minutes. Kenton Grua was the first person in recorded history to walk the entire length of the Grand Canyon.
